Workplace Diversity in the New Normal

Introduction

Covid -19 pandemic has urged us to rethink many priorities in the world of work. One of them is the need to embrace diversity in the workplace. As a result, many corporates around the world are looking at different ways of inculcating work cultures receptive and open to workplace diversity.

 

What is Workplace Diversity?

“Workplace diversity” was understood at first as the creation of a work culture that accepts and respects employees of different races, ethnicities, genders, ages, religions, disabilities, and sexual orientations. Its modern definition has extended further and now considers education, personalities, skill sets, experiences, and knowledge bases as well.

 

Why embrace Workplace Diversity?

While some organizations like Google, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft are considering the ethical branding value additions of this endeavor in addressing the challenges presented by the new normal business environment, many other companies have chosen workplace diversity as a direct way to maximize profit by accessing cheaper labor markets and new untapped markets in different parts of the world.

The studies published by McKinsey’s research and Glassdoor have unveiled that, businesses embracing workplace diversity outperform industry norms by 35% while 67% of job seekers have preferred employers embracing and promoting workplace diversity. According to a study conducted by Gartner, ethnically/culturally diverse boards worldwide have been found to be 43% more likely to experience higher profits even during the pandemic. Highly inclusive organizations generate 2.3x more cash flow per employee, 1.4x more revenue, and are 120% more capable of meeting financial targets.


Few ways to Adopt Workplace Diversity

The results expected through the adoption of workplace diversity is best accomplished only by adhering to the processes relevant to the respective organizations. However, few general steps can be illustrated as follows.

Conclusion

The post- Covid corporate environment has been more challenging than ever to navigate with the traditional approaches to workforce performance maximization. Hence it is vital and essential to embrace and adopt new trends like workplace diversity to create more welcoming and engaging environments at work in order to meet the new and emerging challenges.

    One very good solution is remote work or WFH (Work From Home) which assist in sustaining the work diversity with a welcoming approach. This way along with work life balance it can help employees who struggled in the past as well.
