Recruitment and Selection as a Starting Step to Business Organizational Success

Among the key assets that determine the success and sustainability of a business organization, human capital is regarded as a primary element. No matter how much of an investment is financially made to start and maintain a business organization, the people employed by the organization forms a greater part of the efficacy in which such finances are utilized in the organization. In that regard, the way an employer gets the human resources organized and managed within the institution, is of paramount importance.

Recruitment and Selection in a Nutshell

As defined in (Armstrong and Baron, 2002), human capital is constituting a source of competitive advantage and the process of recruitment plays a major role in making the best use of that advantage in an organization.

The recruitment is not only a process but includes the following:

1.         Human resource recruitment policies

2.      Recruitment, onboarding and retention strategies

3.      Training and skill development resources

Recruitment not only happens as an external process but also it can be done internally within the organization. It can be simply defined as the process of finding and designating applicants for jobs, from among whom the suitable candidates can be selected. In this process, a pool of recruits is gathered and short listed as the initial outcome.

Recruitment and Selection Tips based on Theories

Signaling and screening theory by Bernheim (1994) is important in gaining greater insights into the recruitment process. Accordingly, the following tips can be proposed to enrich the recruitment process in general.

1.    Prioritize relevant experience and candidate motivation over the number of qualifications when shortlisting applicants.

2.   Conduct several rounds of interviews with different staff relevant to the position.

3.  Emphasize on psychometric testing for mental traits towards the second and third      interviews in shortlisting.

4. Test the way candidate can build rapport with members from different levels of the organization.

5.   Assess the co-competencies’ needed to perform well in the job

Conclusion

Employee recruitment and selection is a central function that decides the success of an organization. In looking for the perfectly fitting candidate for a position hoping for best productive performance, it is important to consider the observations made through theories like signaling and screening theory prior to looking at the process of recruitment. The most important aspect of recruitment and selection is to pay attention to the work chemistry of candidates as much as their qualifications.  In that regard, the effective methods like shortlisting candidates and having several rounds of interviews are instrumental in being able to get the right kind of employees on board in an organization to achieve success.
