Work from Home during COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID 19 global pandemic is an unprecedented health crisis that has led to emerge changeable novelties in the world. The whole world is experiencing an unimaginable effects of the pandemic. Since the COVID-19 pandemic is a health crisis, social distancing measures were implemented by governments in many countries all over the world to mitigate the spread of the virus. Hundreds of millions of people have lived through lock downs by altering every aspect of work and life. In response to the social distancing rules and regulations organizations and institutions were encouraged by governments to work remotely at home to stay safe and to ensure the continuity of economic activities.

 

Even before the COVID-19 outbreak the concept of “working from home” (remote work, flexible workplace, telework, telecommuting, and e–working.) was routine for millions of people in Europe and the USA. But the nature of the COVID-19 pandemic had encouraged to make the concept more popular. Even though the spread of the pandemic is being slowed down “working from home” has become a trend in the present context.

 

Benefits of “Working from Home”.

1.      Improved staff health and well being.

2.      Improved employee retention.

3.      Flexibility and agility. 

4.      Financial benefits.

5.      Hire and retain global talent

6.      Better work/life balance.

 

Limitations of “Working from Home”

1.      Working from home doesn't suit everyone.

2.      Harder to maintain team spirit and morality.

3.      Home distractions.

4.      Staff feeling isolated.

5.      Difficulty of monitoring performance. 

6.      Information security risk.

 Human resource is identified as the most valuable asset of every organization. Since people are living beings with feelings and emotions, that is a mandatory requirement to treat with much attention. Unlike traditional working concepts, that has led to creating many challenges to the work of HR practitioners. HR practitioners, as key players in organizations, have to address limitations associated with the concept of WFH. Although WFH has number of benefits, contradictory to those, HR practitioners have the greater responsibility of effective address of improving employee skills, psychological stress, balancing work and family, and company culture reinforcement (Lockwood, 2005) through a virtual platform.

 

Conclusion

To prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, many organizations have had to change their traditional ways of Working from Home concept. Although the advent of WFH has brought advantages, have created certain limitations by creating a complex situation for HR practitioners to handle all HR functions through a virtual platform.

At home, the presence of spouses and children (especially if they are in childhood) participation in career and school activities, disruption of childcare services and education are observed during the pandemic and expected to contribute to a strong impact on household chores Effect for those working remotely.

Yes.There are pros and cons to everything.Staying at home and working can be bit of a hassle,specially for women,but it's not a problem if you can manage the rest of the time well.When it comes to employee safety in an epidemic situation,we have to put up with the disadvantages in order to achieve organisational goals.

  5. There are some negative impacts from WFH like,Lack of Community and Team Work, Lack of Motivation, Unmonitored Performance and those Frequent Breaks, Lack of Office Equipment and Security Concerns, Distractions and Lack of a Good Working Environment.

  6. Many organizations have had to adjust their typical practices of working from home to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Although the introduction of WFH has provided benefits, it has also introduced some limits by requiring HR practitioners to conduct all HR operations through a virtual platform.
